Be Prepared For Your Leaner Permit Driving Knowledge Test

Step 1: Study for the test

The learner permit knowledge test has 32 questions which you’ll answer on a computer at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You’ll need to get at least 25 questions right has a 78% pass mark. A pass result is valid 10 years for Leaner Permit card holder and 12 months for Oversea linces.

To pass the learner permit knowledge test, you will need to read the most recent edition of the Road to Solo Driving handbook. Make sure you study all of the handbook, as the questions in the learner permit test are based on all four chapters.

Step 2: Book and pay for your test

Go to any Visroads Customer Service Centre listed on the inside back cover of this handbook

Remarks: Please bring fowwloing documents :

  • one ‘Category A’ evidence of identity document (e.g. Australian birth certificate or passport)
  • one ‘Category B’ evidence of identity document (e.g. Australian bank statement, student ID or Medicare card)
  • evidence of your current address (if your current address isn’t shown on the Category A or B evidence)



Step 3: Fill out the learner permit application form

Step 4: Take the tests at VicRoads

What tests do I need to take?

There are two tests you’ll need to take:

  • The knowledge test (10-30 minutes)
  • The eyesight test (5 minutes)

What do I need to bring?

You’ll need:

Your unsigned learner permit application form

  • one ‘Category A’ evidence of identity document (e.g. Australian birth certificate or passport)
  • one ‘Category B’ evidence of identity document (e.g. Australian bank statement, student ID or Medicare card)
  • evidence of your current address (if your current address isn’t shown on the Category A or B evidence)

If you don’t bring these documents, you won’t be able to take the tests.



Step 5: Pay for your learner permit card

Once you’ve passed the test, you’ll be issued with a Victorian learner permit.
